End-of-app-updates on Clover 1st Gen devices

Clover devices follow a defined lifecycle: sell → no longer sold → end-of-app-updates. Once a device reaches the end-of-app-update phase, Clover no longer provides:

  • Operating system updates
  • Feature enhancements
  • Bug fixes or security patches
  • Technical assistance or device replacement

Clover continues to focus on newer hardware generations with modern operating systems, delivering improved performance, security, and support.

Impacted devices

As part of this lifecycle, Clover has formally stopped releasing new app updates for 1st Gen devices. These are all devices running below Android API level 25. The table shows the 1st Gen devices that are nearing the end of their app update support. Serial number prefixes are provided to identify 1st Gen models.

Table: 1st Gen devices

Why it matters

The end-of-app-update phase is crucial for reducing security risks, optimizing resource allocation, and maintaining a quality merchant experience.

  • Reduce security risks: Older platforms receive limited security updates, making them vulnerable to phishing and malware attacks.
  • Optimize resources: Supporting outdated Android versions requires significant effort for updates, support, and compliance, which is both costly and resource-intensive.
  • Maintain quality: Legacy devices lack updated payment features, are ineligible for repairs or replacements, and only receive critical security patches. Merchants are encouraged to upgrade or pay an end-of-support fee.

What you need to know

1st Gen devices will not receive any app updates. While existing apps will continue to function, they are considered legacy and will not receive future updates. Any new features, improvements, or compatibility changes will not be available on these devices.

Clover will stop publishing app updates to legacy devices—this includes our apps and third-party apps. You will not be able to create or update apps on these devices.

Recommended action

We recommend you plan for this change to minimize disruptions to merchants. Check which devices are supported by your app in App Settings. Ensure your apps are compatible with the latest Clover devices and encourage your merchants to upgrade.

To view the devices your app supports:

  1. Log in to your Developer Dashboard.
  2. Select App Settings > App Type.
  3. The Clover Devices column displays the device type and generation that your app supports.
  4. If your app no longer supports 1st Gen devices, deselect it from the App Type.

❗️

Important

If you remove support for the 1st Gen devices, please also be sure to communicate to your merchants that your app is sunsetting support for those devices.
